A practical guide by Warren Giffin, Director at GEKKOSHOT
Something is changing in the way people find businesses online. Most business owners haven’t picked up on it yet.
Google still dominates search, it still drives 345 times more traffic than every AI search platform combined, and that isn’t going to change any time soon. But what has changed is what happens once someone types a query.
Six in ten Google searches now end without a single click. Google’s AI Overview surfaces the answer directly on the results page, and the searcher moves on, often without ever landing on a website.
The scale of this shift is significant. Google AI Overviews now reach more than 2 billion people every month. ChatGPT has surpassed 1 billion weekly active users, making it the fourth most visited website on the internet – ahead of Instagram. AI Overviews currently appear on 55% of all Google searches, and that figure continues to rise.
This isn’t a forecast. It’s already happening.
Which raises an important question: when someone asks an AI tool something that your business should be answering, does your business actually appear?
What is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation, the practice of positioning your content and brand so that AI platforms (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot) cite, reference, or recommend you when users search for answers.
It doesn’t replace SEO. It builds on top of it.
In fact, 76% of the sources that Google AI Overviews cite are already ranking in the top 10 organic results. Strong SEO foundations put you halfway there already. GEO is about closing the remaining gap, making sure AI models can locate your content, interpret it, and choose to reference your business over a competitor’s.
Why this matters commercially
The data makes a compelling case:
- AI visitors convert at 4.4 times the rate of traditional organic visitors. There are fewer clicks overall, but those that arrive via AI are considerably more valuable.
- Businesses with a GEO strategy are capturing 3.4 times more organic traffic than those without one.
- 70% of businesses report a higher ROI from prioritising AI SEO.
At the same time, 26% of all brands currently have zero mentions in Google AI Overviews, and the top 50 brands appearing in AI account for nearly 29% of all citations. The gap between visible and invisible is widening quickly.
7 practical steps to get your business cited in AI search
No theory, just actions you can take.
1. Answer questions directly at the top of your content
AI models skim pages and pull out relevant passages. They favour content where the answer appears early, under a clear heading, in plain language. If your page buries the answer under 400 words of preamble, AI will skip past you and cite the competitor who answered in the first two sentences.
Lead every key section with a direct answer, then expand with supporting detail underneath.
2. Structure your pages for extraction, not just readability
AI doesn’t read a page from top to bottom the way a human does. It breaks content into individual passages and assesses each one separately for clarity and relevance.
Use H2 and H3 headings that reflect the questions people actually ask. Keep paragraphs short. Use tables and lists where they add value. Include FAQ sections. Structured pages are nearly three times more likely to be cited than dense blocks of text.
3. Include data, statistics, and specific claims
Research from Princeton University found that incorporating statistics and citing sources can increase AI visibility by up to 40%. AI models favour content with specific, verifiable information over broad generalisations.
Rather than “we’ve helped lots of clients save money,” write “we saved our clients an average of £2,400 per year on their mortgage repayments across 127 cases in 2025.” Specificity signals authority.
4. Build your brand presence beyond your own website
AI doesn’t draw exclusively from your site. It pulls from directories, industry publications, review platforms, local media, and forums. The more consistently your brand appears across the web, the more credible AI considers you as a source.
Brands in the top 25% for web mentions earn more than 10 times the AI Overview citations of the next 25%. Getting referenced on sites that AI already trusts – industry directories, local news outlets, professional bodies, is one of the highest-leverage actions you can take.
5. Keep your content up to date
ChatGPT is the AI model most likely to cite newer or recently updated content. AI systems are increasingly favouring current pages, particularly for topics that evolve over time.
This doesn’t mean a full rewrite every few months. It means reviewing your five most important pages on a quarterly basis, updating statistics, adding recent examples, refreshing the last-updated date. Set a recurring calendar reminder every 90 days and make it a habit.
6. Make sure AI crawlers can actually access your site
This is the technical side, and it matters more than most people realise. If your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, your site loads slowly, or your content is locked inside JavaScript that crawlers can’t render, AI models simply won’t see you.
Confirm your site allows access from AI bot user agents. Implement schema markup so AI engines get a clean, machine-readable summary of each page. Ensure fast load times and solid mobile performance.
7. Start tracking your AI visibility
Traditional SEO metrics rankings, clicks, traffic, still matter, but they won’t tell you whether you’re appearing in AI-generated answers.
Start querying your key topics directly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Ask the questions your customers would ask. See whether your business comes up. If it doesn’t, that tells you exactly where to focus your efforts.
AI Visibility, how frequently your brand is mentioned in AI-generated answers, and for which topics – is one of the most important new metrics in search. If you’re not tracking it, you’re operating without a clear picture.
The Opportunity Is There. The Question Is Whether You Take It.
SEO isn’t going anywhere. Google still delivers vastly more traffic than AI search engines. But the landscape is shifting, and businesses that adapt now will hold a meaningful advantage over those that don’t.
GEO isn’t a separate discipline, it’s a natural evolution of SEO. If you’ve been investing in quality content, technical foundations, and building your online reputation, you already have the base. GEO is about ensuring that base earns its return in the AI search world as well as the traditional one.
The businesses appearing in AI answers right now aren’t doing anything revolutionary. They’re executing the fundamentals well and structuring their content so AI can actually make use of it.
That’s the opportunity.
