How well does your website rank? What are good keywords?
For every digital marketer, these are two very important questions that we need to have answers for. It’s difficult to have one-sentence answers for such a large and diverse topic. I’ll make it easy for you and break it down in this complete guide to checking keyword ranking in Google!
There are three primary ways to check for keyword rankings in Google and I’ll explain each process briefly so you have a basic understanding of each method. Then I will discuss how to use Google Search Console so you can better understand how your keywords are doing on Google.
3 Ways to Check Keyword Rankings
- Manually Checking the Keyword Rankings
- To check your ranking manually, you will need to do a keyword search and scroll through the results pages until your content and website is shown. The disadvantage is that this is a very time-consuming process and is not efficient for conducting analytic reports on your marketing strategy.
- Using Google Search Console
- This is a free tool provided by Google that is used to check keyword rankings automatically and removes any need for manual labour.
- Using a Paid Tool such as SEMrush to Track Keyword Rankings
- SEMrush is an excellent tool to use for tracking specific keywords in Google. This is a personal favourite tool of mine as it helps you track the success of your website. It comes with four powerful SEO tools:
- SERP (search engine results page) feature
- Organic Traffic Insights
- Keyword Manager
- Keyword Difficulty Tool
- Search Volume

How to Find Your Website Rankings on Google
Like I previously mentioned, Search Console is a free tool that website owners can use to find out how well their website ranks on Google for certain keywords. It is however, limited in terms of it doesn’t allow you to track keywords, find backlink opportunities or see what your competitors are doing.
Set up Google Console and then go into “Performance Report” and there you will see 4 boxes: total clicks, total impressions, average CTR and average position. There you will see your statistics for the last 3 months. To find out where your website ranks in Google, click “Position” which will show you which queries are ranked in the highest to the lowest position. Keep in mind that this figure is a combination of every URL on your website. To filter out the URLs, click the “Pages” table and click on each URL to check their keyword rankings in Google.
On average, it takes Google 1 day to 4 months to rank a page. With high authority established websites, it can rank 1 day whereas sites with low authority may take 4 months. That is why it is so important to publish pages and content that are properly SEO optimised so that it can be ranked immediately.
